What is PAINT?

PAINT (Psychosocial ADHD and behavioural problems INTerventions) is the umbrella name for the research being carried out within the Consortium “ADHD and Intrusive Behaviour”. In this consortium, subsidised by ZonMw, a large number of Dutch practical institutes, research institutes and knowledge networks work together, with the aim of improving the care for children with ADHD and hyperactive behaviour. The various research projects involve teachers and healthcare professionals, parents, mental healthcare professionals, and employees of municipalities, district teams and youth and family centres. Many members of the consortium are also active in the Academic Workshop on ADHD and Oppressive Behaviour, an important platform for the dissemination of knowledge.

The goal of PAINT is to improve the care for children with ADHD and behavioural problems.

What do we research in the PAINT studies?

In several subprojects, we are researching the following themes and questions:

1. The current practice of care and education for children with ADHD and behavioural problems: What does the care in the Netherlands look like at this moment? Is use being made of proven effective interventions? Are guidelines being followed? And which factors influence the choices made in care?

2. Antecedent and consequent techniques of proven effective interventions are both effective for teachers and parents. Is the combination of both still effective when given at school, by the practice-nurse or by mental health care workers?

3. Tailored care: for whom does which intervention work best? Are there subgroups of children or parents for whom certain (combinations of) interventions work better or less well?

4. Cost-effectiveness: what is the balance between the effectiveness and the costs of interventions?

PAINT-P

In PAINT-Parent, the effectiveness of the components of parent training in ADHD was investigated using a microtrial and the follow-up studies Paint-POH, Paint-GGZ and Paint-P Pilotstudy investigate the effectiveness of combined parent training in different settings.

.

PAINT-T

In the Paint-Teacher trial, the effectiveness of the components of teacher training was examined by means of a microtrial, and in the follow-up study Paint T trial, the effectiveness of a combined teacher training will be examined.

.

PAINT- IPDMA

In PAINT-IPDMA, an individual participant data meta-analysis is being conducted on psychosocial treatments for children and adolescents with ADHD. In the follow-up IPDMA study, the psychosocial treatments for children and adolescents with behavioural problems are investigated.

PAINT-Move

The goal of the PAINT-move project is to investigate whether it helps children with ADHD to move in the classroom while working. For this purpose, the children use a small bike under their desk for six weeks.

PAINT-C

The PAINT-C study maps the care for children with ADHD and/or hyperactive behaviour in the Netherlands at municipalities, CJGs/District teams and schools and brings scientific knowledge of effective treatments to parents, teachers and care professionals (PAINT-I).

PLOS

The study PLOS (Planning at School) investigates the effectiveness of a programme to support secondary school students with planning problems. PLOS consists of two parts PLOS-basic and PLOS-extra.

Very friendly and helpful, we really saw a difference after the parent training!

Pim, Parent

The new tools have helped me.

Anna, Teacher

Very happy with it! We and the children were able to come in with our questions at any time. Very helpful.
